Radiology Resident Career Workshops
A. Upstate Career Workshop
The upstate career workshop was held on October 24, 2003, at the Eastman Kodak Education and Development Center. There were 35 radiology residents in attendance. The format included panel discussions related to choosing a subspecialty in radiology, types of radiology practice, and contract issues pertaining to radiology. Dr. Arvin Robinson was the keynote speaker and discussed organizations in radiology.
B. Downstate Career Workshop
The downstate career workshop was held on November 15, 2003, at Lenox Hill Hospital with 88 residents in attendance. Topics included panel discussions on choosing a fellowship, financial and legal issues in radiology, and types of radiology practice. Dr. Amis was the ACR guest speaker.
This year we also held a dedicated career workshop section for radiation oncology residents. There were 24 attendees who met in a separate conference room. The workshop was moderated by Dr. Bernadine Donahue. Dr. Ariel Hirsch, a radiation oncology resident and Member-at-Large of the NYSRS-RPS, also helped to create this program which included panel discussions of “types of practice” as well a presentation on the oral boards.
C. Dr. Shannon Campbell, Immediate Past President of the NYSRS-RPS, is writing an article for the ACR Bulletin that will discuss both the upstate and downstate career workshops which is scheduled to be published in February, 2004.
D. The plan is for a downstate workshop this year. Once a date is selected, the program format can be
developed and invitations will be sent out to potential speakers. Possible dates include Saturday, November 13 or Saturday, November 20, 2004.
Resident E-mail Database
A. There has been an ongoing effort to collect the e-mail addresses of all radiology residents in New York State to develop a database to electronically disseminate information about upcoming resident conferences, as well as information on fellowship and employment related topics.
B. Radiology resident e-mail addresses, many of which were not previously in the database, were added after being obtained from the recent upstate and downstate career workshops.
C. We plan to continue to update and expand the e-mail database. A letter will be sent to all New York State radiology program directors indicating the importance of their assistance in enabling us to successfully update the database. This letter will inform them that each July they will be requested to provide the NYSRS-RPS with an updated list of their resident’s e-mail addresses as well as a list of their incoming/outgoing residents.
