S. Van McCrary received a Ph.D. from the University of
Texas Medical Branch, an M.P.H. from the Johns Hopkins University, a J.D. from
the University of Tennessee, and a B.A. from Vanderbilt University. His previous academic experience includes
appointments at Baylor College of Medicine, University of Houston Law Center, University
of Florida College of Medicine, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and East
Carolina University School of Medicine, as well as two years in the private
practice of law in Houston, Texas.
Dr. McCrary
teaches, researches, writes, and consults in a variety of areas including
clinical biomedical ethics, ethical and legal aspects of the care of dying
patients, medical decision making, health law and policy, palliative care,
conflicts of interest in biomedical research, pediatric and neonatal care, and
psychiatric issues in bioethics consultation.
He has published widely in both medical and legal journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, and
is a frequent invited speaker at national and international conferences. He also serves as a member of the
International Advisory Board of the Centre for Ethics and Law, University of
Copenhagen.
