RESIDENCY TRAINING IN GENERAL SURGERY

In April 2005, the Residency Review Committee for Surgery (American Board of Surgery) once again granted our residency program full five-year accreditation, without any citations or areas of concern. The RRC also gave the program director and the institution a commendation for their documented efforts that ensure the program's compliance with the program requirements. This accreditation is the highest given by the RRC and, together with the commendation, it demonstrates the quality of our program, our staff, and the residents we attract to Stony Brook.

2009 Resident Match: Our resident match this year was an exceptional success, as general surgery continued to be a very competitive specialty throughout the nation. We received 700 applications, interviewed 70 candidates, and offered positions to six of them who were in the top third. Our six new residents — all stellar young doctors, from Tufts University, New York Medical College, SUNY Downstate, SUNY Buffalo, UMDNJ, and University of Athens — highly matched our preferences among all applicants desiring to train at Stony Brook.
